One of our favorite things to share with brides is our insight into wedding dress shopping and bridal styling. Wedding dress shopping can be one of the more fun and exciting tasks during wedding planning but it can also be a lot to handle. Shopping for your wedding dress is not the same as shopping for work clothes or clothes you wear in your everyday life. If you are not very familiar with bridal fashion, it can be overwhelming to know where to start when it comes to wedding dress shopping.

While the fun part is getting to look in magazines or online at all the designer wedding dresses, there are some other factors to keep in mind before you head to your first wedding dress shopping appointment. Today we will be sharing what you should wear when you go to try on wedding dresses. While undergarments are not the most fun thing to think about or talk about, it is an important aspect of wedding dress shopping that can often be overlooked. Follow our expert tips and advice for what to wear to try on wedding dresses and make the most of your shopping appointments.

If you are a bride who is ready to start shopping for your wedding dress, you are probably wondering what you need to do to prepare for your shopping appointments. Don't miss our advice video sharing everything brides need to know about what to wear when going wedding dress shopping

Easy Outfits

The first thing to keep in mind when it comes to thinking about what to wear to your wedding dress shopping appointments is that you will be getting undressed. Whatever outfit you choose to shop in, you will have to take it off to try on wedding dresses. You want to wear something that is easy and comfortable. Make sure your outfit is something that you can take on and off fairly quickly so you don’t waste valuable appointment time.

If you show up in complicated lace up boots or a dress you have to untie, it’s going to take you longer to take it off and put it back on which will cut into your appointment time. Choose an outfit that’s easy to get on and off quickly so you can jump right in and start trying on dresses.

Your Undergarments

Now that we’ve discussed what outer items to wear, the next tip is the most important in what to wear when trying on wedding dresses. You want to wear nude colored undergarments. We have seen brides show up in all sorts of undergarments, but it is very hard to focus on what a wedding dress looks like overall if you can see hot pink or black underwear showing through. We know that nude might not be the most exciting shade to wear, but you don’t want your undergarments showing through your wedding dress so leave the dark and bright colors at home.

While we’re discussing undergarments, please also be sure to wear underwear. Many stores will not let you try on dresses if you are not wearing underwear so you may be sent home or will have to purchase a pair of underwear when you arrive in store. It’s not sanitary to let someone not wearing underwear try on a dress that others will also be trying on.

You should also be prepared to go braless during your shopping appointment. You can certainly wear or bring a strapless bra but it’s likely that even a strapless bra will interfere with the necklines of certain dresses or even the back of the dress. Many bridal designers create their wedding dresses with bra cups in the bodice so you may not even need a bra on wedding day. We would suggest wearing pasties, especially if you are more shy or uncomfortable, so you will have at least a little coverage while not interfering with the dresses.

Shapewear

Many brides who are booking shopping appointments with us will ask about wearing shapewear to their appointments. Shapewear can be great for trying on wedding dresses. Especially if you are on the shy side, shapewear can help you feel more comfortable getting undressed and trying on gowns. A layer of shapewear can also help the dresses slide up and down your body a bit easier, especially as you start to get sweaty and dresses want to stick to your body. Trying on bridal gowns can be hard work!

While shapewear is great to wear during your shopping trips, we don’t actually recommend wearing it down the aisle unless your dress calls for it. Shapewear will add a layer of volume so don’t wear it during your alterations appointment as we want to get your alterations measurements without any interference.

If you do opt to wear shape wear to your wedding dress shopping appointments, be sure to remember our previous undergarments tips and choose a nude shade.
