The Style You Love

One of the most common questions we hear from our brides at Lovella when shopping for their wedding dress is what shape bridal gown will look best on their body type. This question comes from brides of all body types and heights, but is one in particular we hear from our tall brides as they think there may need to be some special considerations for their wedding dress.

If you are a tall bride, over six feet tall, there are a few things to keep in mind when shopping for your wedding dress. The most important factor to consider when shopping for your wedding dress and picking out a style that suits your body type, is to choose what you love. No matter your body shape, size, height, it all comes down to the style and silhouette you feel the most excited to wear.

There is not a set formula for brides to know exactly what type of wedding dress to wear. We can’t say that brides of a certain height should only wear ball gowns or that brides of a certain size look best in a mermaid style gown. The dress that you can’t wait to walk down the aisle in is going to be the best dress for you, no matter the silhouette. A dress that you love and feel confident wearing is only going to make you feel more beautiful and excited for wedding day.

Personality Counts

At Lovella we have helped countless brides find their dream wedding dress. Brides of all different shapes and sizes and heights. We’ve seen brides with similar builds choose completely different wedding dress styles because it suited their personalities.

As bridal stylists, we can’t always tell just from seeing a bride what style wedding dress is going to suit them the best. It may take trying on a few different dresses to nail down the shape that they are most drawn to. However, once we hit on something that works, it can be like a lightbulb going off. When a bride finds a dress she loves, she can light up. They might hold themselves differently or walk more confidently. How a dress makes a bride feel is as important as how it looks on them. Pay attention to your mood or energy as you are trying on wedding dresses.

Try It All

If you are shopping for your wedding dress for the first time, try on a lot of different dresses. This tip is true for tall brides, petite brides, brides of any size and shape. If you have never tried on wedding gowns before, try on many different styles. The first step when you are wedding dress shopping is to figure out what shape of dress you like on your body and you can only figure that out by testing different shapes or silhouettes.

Try on the ball gown wedding dresses, more fitted dresses, A-line bridal dresses - be open to any possibility when trying on wedding dresses because you never know what you will love. Bridal dresses look different on the hanger than on bodies, so don’t let that be the only determining factor when choosing dresses.

As you try on different shapes, see what really excites you. This will help you decide if you want to show off your body or if you want to be a bit more conservative. Do you want to feel like a princess bride in a ball gown or do you want to feel more sexy and show off your body? Once you’ve determined the shape of the dress that you like, then you can start getting into the details and the design of the dress.

The Perfect Length

The main thing that tall brides need to look out for when wedding dress shopping is the length of their wedding dress. If you are a bride who is over six feet tall and you want to wear heels on wedding day, you may have to pay extra money when ordering your wedding dress to ensure the length that you need is there. You want your wedding dress to be grazing the floor to be the perfect length. If you don’t want to pay extra for the additional fabric, you can just plan to wear flats on wedding day.

Keep in mind that you will be trying on sample sizes at your bridal store. This may not be the size wedding dress you end up ordering. For example, you may be trying on a bridal size 10 in store, but your body measurements align with a bridal size 6, which will be the size you ultimately order. Some wedding dresses can get shorter as the sizes go down, so don’t base the length of your wedding dress on the sample size alone. Be sure to discuss this with your bridal stylist so you can be sure to get a correct length when you order your dress.

It may give you peace of mind to order a couple extra inches of length to be on the safe side so your dress isn’t too short. Alterations can ensure your dress is hemmed to the correct length, but there is not much they can do to add length if your dress is too short to begin with.

Proportions

There are a few other things to keep in mind as a tall bride when trying on wedding dresses. Depending on your body proportions, certain elements may not fall in the exact right place.

If you are a tall bride with a long torso, pay attention to where the bodice of the dresses hit you. Ideally, they will hit at your natural waistline, but if you have a longer torso, it could fall a big high on you. It may not necessarily look bad on you, but it’s something to keep in mind for proportions. Just because something is supposed to hit at your natural waist doesn’t mean you have to follow those rules. Remember that if you love how it looks and feels on your body, that’s all that matters.

A drop waist wedding dress instead of a natural waist style might be a good fit for tall brides, so that it’s more a fluid look and doesn’t have any interruptions. You won’t even need to worry about proportions then.

One last consideration when it comes to proportions is if your wedding dress has straps or sleeves. For tall brides, we have seen that the distance from the top of the dress to their shoulder is typically longer than the dress pattern, so you may need to have a longer strap or more length added to your sleeves. This is all where your expert bridal stylist comes in and they will be able to assist you in navigating the proportions of your body to have the best fitting wedding dress.
