Emotional Purchases

In our years of helping brides find their dream wedding dress at Lovella, it would be impossible to count the number of brides that tell us they want to go home and sleep on their decision before they say yes to the dress. While this seems like a logical and practical thing to do, it may not always work in a bride’s favor. Buying a wedding dress is a large purchase and you certainly don’t want to have buyer’s remorse.

Think of other big-ticket items you purchase, like a car. It makes sense to go home and run the numbers and think about your decision before going back to the car dealership. Buying a car is a more practical decision than an emotional one. You are buying something to get you from point A to point B. On the other hand, a wedding dress purchase is going to come with a lot more emotion so your thinking process should be a bit different. Your wedding gown is a big part of what will make you feel like a bride and a lot of emotions come with that.

What You See Isn’t What You Get

Another important aspect to keep in mind when wedding dress shopping is that you are not buying exactly what you see. To go back to the car analogy, when you go to the dealership, you are most often getting the car that you see. Or perhaps you are ordering a duplicate of that car with maybe some different features, but you know what you are going to get. When it comes to wedding dresses, you are placing an order for a new item. You are going to be trying on a sample dress, and outside of a sample sale, you are then ordering a new version of that dress based on your size measurements. So while you are physically seeing what the dress looks like, the fit and the cut is not altered yet to your body.

Keep in mind that you are trying on dresses that are not 100% what you will be wearing down the aisle. The alterations process is going to elevate your chosen dress to fit you perfectly. The design of the gown will be the same, but the fit on your body and how the dress looks in photos, is all going to be a bit different from trying on the sample dress to your final dress when you walk down the aisle after alterations.

Analysis Paralysis

The most common issue we see when brides want to go home and sleep on their wedding dress decision is they get stuck in analysis paralysis. Brides will obsess over the photos they took while trying on dresses and start overanalyzing every single little detail. They are missing the big picture. Remember that the sample wedding dresses are not going to fit perfectly. Your bridal stylist may use clamps to get you into a dress to make it a bit better - we have all kinds of tricks we use to help brides into dresses.

One of the worst things we think brides can do is make their decision on their wedding dress while not wearing the dress. You lose one of the biggest components of wearing a wedding dress: how it makes you feel. How you feel in a wedding dress is so important to deciding what dress you want to wear down the aisle. You want to choose the dress that makes you feel beautiful and confident, and you can lose that feeling when just looking at a photo. You can certainly make a very analytical decision based on looking at photos, but there is so much more to choosing a wedding dress. You need all the information to make the best decision and that includes how you feel in the dress, how the dress looks while you are looking in the mirror, and also how the dress looks in photos. You don’t want to make the decision based on just one of these factors. This triangle of mirror, photos, and feeling is what you should make your wedding dress decision on.

If you find you are really not ready to make a decision in-store and you want to go home and process before making your final decision, you can, but we urge you to not stare at the photos. Go home and think about it, get some sleep, and come back to the store with a clear mind and a clear feeling based on your triangle of factors.

Multiple Dresses

One common thing we find as brides are shopping for their wedding dress is falling in love with two dresses. Wearing a wedding dress is so unlike your everyday clothing, so you might not know what style you like best or what silhouette will be best for you. You might end up loving two beautiful dresses. Using the mirror-photos-feeling triangle still applies in this situation. This is one scenario where you really should decide in-store so that you can try on each dress and go back and forth to see which is best. You can try on the two dresses you are stuck between, multiple times if needed, and consider all the factors. You will not regret your decision or have buyer's remorse following these tips because you have considered all the components. You’ve decided which dress you like the look of both in the mirror and photos and also makes you feel the best while wearing.
