How to Prevent Clashing Opinions Before They Happen

The easiest way to avoid overwhelming opinions is to be intentional about your guest list. Here is some of our past advice on how to deal with opinionated wedding dress shopping guests and also how many people to invite to your bridal dress shopping appointment.

We always recommend bringing one to three people who truly understand your style, support your vision, and want what is best for you, not what they would choose for themselves. That may feel limiting, but remember this: just as you are surprising your fiancé with your wedding day look, you can surprise everyone else too.

Too many voices almost always equals confusion. More information does not equal better decisions. It often equals overwhelm.

A helpful rule of thumb: if you would not trust this person to dress you in your daily life, you probably should not trust them to choose your wedding dress.

Another beautiful option is to include extended loved ones later. After you've ordered and once your gown arrives in the shop for inspection, you can invite them to see it then. By that point, you already feel confident in your decision, which makes outside opinions far less disruptive.

At the end of the day, you are the one walking down the aisle. You are the one wearing the dress. You are the one looking back at your photos for the rest of your life. Even if loved ones are contributing financially, your happiness matters.

Give Yourself Permission to Set Boundaries

One of the most helpful things you can do for yourself is to set boundaries for yourself. You can graciously thank everyone for their input and still choose what feels right for you.

You can say, “I appreciate your opinion, but this one makes me feel the most like myself.” You can book a solo appointment to reset and think clearly. You can step away for a week and come back refreshed.
